Introduction to the Arab Tyrant's Manual

Share

I managed to put together the introductory chapter to the "Arab Tyrant's Manual".

Find it in PDF here. This includes the planned outline, but nothing from the "main body" yet.

I thought about posting it as an article but it was just too long. Leave a comment and tell me what you think (after all, you can't comment within a PDF)...

you might even go back to the origins and add the Chinese Mandate of Heaven and something about it being withdrawn when they don't protect the least of their people ( the most vulnerable, the children, the old, the poor etc.) I'm sure you can find a way to frame in in terms that fit an Arab esthetic but these things are world wide basic protections expected of absolute rulers from time instant, are the not?)

I'm a Historian and the more places and periods I study the more that seems to be so. And seems to be when teh Revolts happen, when no matter how much brutality has been accepted, once teh ruler stops caring for those who have nothing and no way to protect themselves, they suddenly begin to sprout 'champions amongst themselves, and then the rest of the people join them... we'll see if this happens in Syria, but it seems to be, no?

IT looks good so far. I think you could do more to consider the economics of tyranny in Arab states. I'm not sure to what extent this speaks to other states, but in Yemen we see regime loyalist have steadily occupied ever larger portions of the private sector. So for example regime loyalists control 80% of staple food imports to Yemen. Regime leaders are also heavily involved in the illegal export of oil (subsidised byt the state in Yemen). In this current economic crisis regime loyalists are actually making extra money because of the constrained supply of basic goods and fuel.

I like the tone & balance so far. Well written. Can't help comparing with medieval "divine right" of European monarchies.
